Long-Term Care goes beyond medical care and nursing care. It includes coverage for many different types of assitance
that you may need in the event of a disablity injury or illness that prevents you from caring for yourself.
Long-term illnesses or disabling injuries can happen to anyone, at anytime and at any age. Still, the longer you
live, the greater the chance is that you will need long-term care. About 19 % of Americans age 65 and older experience
some degree of chronic impairment. In the year 2020, approximately 12 million Americans are expected to need long-term
care. And because women generally outlive men by several years, they face a 50% greater likelihood than men of entering a
nursing home after age 65.
Many people think that Medicare, Medicaid, group and individual medical insurance or disablility insurance will fund their
long-term care needs. However, Medicare and Medicaid only provide limited coverage for long-term care benefits and Medicaid
is only available to those who meet certain income and resource requirements (usually when their savings are depleted).
As for employer-sponsored or individual medical plans, they provide only very limited coverage for long-term care services.
